On New Year’s Eve, Forbes announced the top picks for cars in terms of safety for 2015, as chosen by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety last week. The good news is that this year, there are nearly twice the number of models that earned either Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ over last year. Toyota dominated the list, with 12 models out of the 71 chosen; Honda and Subaru also dominated for vehicle safety in 2015.
Two vehicles of note are the Toyota Prius v, and the Honda CR-V, both modified from recent years to improve safety and protection for drivers.
The four criteria that determine which cars are eligible for the safety awards include the small overlap front test, head restraints, roof strength, and side protection. Those that win in the Top Safety Pick+ category are required to have a superior or advanced rating for front crash prevention.
So, which cars performed best in terms of safety? Here’s a few of the models that made the list:
Subaru SV Crosstek
Subaru Impreza
Lexus CT 200h
Mazda 3
